1973 Matra-Simca Bagheera
I bought the car in '95 from a GI in California, who had brought it with him from Germany in '84. These cars were never officially imported into the US, even though Chrysler owned the company at the time. It is a small French mid-engined 3-seater (abreast), with mechanicals based on the Simca 1100.
Eventhough the papers say 1972, this is a '73 model, which is the year Matra introduced the Bagheera, celebrating their victories at the 24 hours of Le Mans. Unfortunately I have found no time to continue this project, and now with a son and a new business, I had to let it go. Click on the pictures to see a larger picture.
I always loved the lines of the car, very reminiscent of Maseratis of the time. These are not the correct fog lights, but they fit well.
I did have the correct tailights (Who knows what these are from?). The fiberglass body needed work in some spots, as you can see. The floorpan was rusty but mostly salvageable.
The engine was a 1440cc version from a later model with twin Weber carbs. Before moving to DC, I actually drove this car from San Francisco to Los Angeles and back.
The interior was in good shape and also came from the same later model with power windows.
